Paver Planting - May 2, 2008 (Revised 6/08)

Press Release:
Blue Star Mothers, Florence Rotary and
Alternative School Students join in tribute to
local men and women of the Armed Forces.
On Friday, May
2nd, a group of Blue
Star Mothers, Boone County Alternative School
Students and members of Florence Rotary gathered
at the Boone County Veterans Memorial to place 44
new pavers in among those previously planted at
the Memorial. Working together on hands and
knees, each team of Mother, Student and Rotarian
dug out the existing blank pavers and replaced
them with pavers engraved with the names of sons
and daughters of the Blue Star Mothers. Removing
the existing blank pavers proved time-consuming
and resulted in several minor scrapes and broken
nails, but the obvious pride in the placement of
each new Paver made the effort more than
worthwhile. During the work, Students, Mothers
and Rotarians shared stories and heard about the
service members being honored with the newly
engraved Pavers. Clearly Mother Nature herself
was an honorary Blue Star Mother for a day; the
forecast for clouds and rain gave way to a
beautiful blue sky in recognition of the work
being done.
The Blue Star Mothers purchased the 44 pavers to
be planted, on which the names of 44 active duty
military personnel have been etched. The Mothers
hold various events throughout the year to raise
funds with which to purchase the pavers. They
were obviously quite appreciative of the help
from the Students and from Florence Rotary with
the task of placing the engraved pavers at the
memorial.
